🔍 What is Speech Therapy?

Speech-Language Therapy (SLT) is a clinical discipline that evaluates, diagnoses and treats disorders of communication, language, speech, fluency, voice, literacy and swallowing. Our certified Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) work with individuals across the full lifespan — from toddlers who are not yet talking to adults recovering from stroke or neurological conditions.

At Sherin’s Rainbow, our Speech Therapy programme uses play-based, naturalistic approaches for young children and structured, evidence-based intervention frameworks for older children and adults. We draw on approaches including PROMPT, Hanen, PECS, Makaton, Lidcombe, ReST and Nuffield Dyspraxia Programme depending on each client’s profile and goals.

Every client receives a comprehensive communication assessment before therapy begins, ensuring the intervention plan is precisely targeted, meaningful and family-centred from day one.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

My child is 2 and not talking much — should I be worried?
By 24 months, most children should have approximately 50 words and be starting to combine two words together (e.g. “more milk”, “daddy go”). If your child is not at this milestone, we strongly recommend booking a speech assessment. Early intervention for language delay has outstanding outcomes. Do not “wait and see” beyond 18–24 months if you have concerns.
Do you offer AAC therapy for non-verbal children?
Yes. We provide comprehensive AAC assessment and therapy including PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), Proloquo2Go and other speech-generating device training, Makaton signing, and core vocabulary board systems. Every child deserves a voice — in whatever form that takes. AAC does not reduce a child’s motivation to develop spoken language; research shows it supports it.
Can adults access speech therapy at Sherin’s Rainbow?
Yes. We provide adult speech-language therapy for individuals recovering from stroke (aphasia, dysarthria), Traumatic Brain Injury, Parkinson’s Disease (using the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment — LSVT), laryngectomy rehabilitation, and voice disorders. Please call us to check current adult therapy availability.
Will my child’s school be involved in their speech therapy?
With your permission, we actively liaise with teachers, resource teachers and SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Coordinators) to share strategies, provide classroom communication plans and attend review meetings. Children make much faster progress when therapy strategies are consistently reinforced in the school environment.
How do I know if my child needs speech therapy or just more time?
There are well-established developmental milestones for communication at each age. If your child is not meeting age-appropriate milestones, or if you — as a parent — feel something is not right, trust that instinct and book an assessment. An assessment will either confirm your child is developing typically (reassuring you) or identify genuine needs so support can begin promptly. There is no downside to checking early.
