🔍 What is Remedial Education?

Remedial Education at Sherin’s Rainbow Learning Academy is a structured, supportive and expertly delivered academic programme for students who have fallen behind grade-level expectations in reading, writing, spelling or mathematics. Unlike conventional tutoring, our remedial programme targets the foundational skill gaps and processing weaknesses that prevent academic progress — not just the content that was missed.

Our specialist remedial educators use evidence-based, multisensory teaching methods in small-group or individual settings, creating a calm, non-judgmental learning environment where students rediscover their academic confidence alongside building genuinely transferable skills. We celebrate every gain — no matter how small — and ensure each student always knows exactly how far they have come.

Our programme is structured around the child’s individual academic profile and is fully coordinated with their school programme where appropriate — ensuring what happens at Sherin’s Rainbow reinforces and accelerates what happens in the classroom.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How is remedial education different from tutoring?
Tutoring typically re-teaches classroom content using the same methods that have already failed the student. Remedial education identifies why a student is struggling — the underlying skill gaps, processing weaknesses or learning differences — and uses completely different, evidence-based instructional approaches specifically designed to address those root causes. The results are therefore fundamentally different.
How long will my child need remedial education?
Duration depends on the size of the skill gap and the child’s rate of progress. Children with a 1–2 year academic gap typically need 6–12 months of regular remedial support. We reassess formally every 3 months and update you clearly on progress and projected timelines. As gaps close, sessions may reduce in frequency and the student transitions back to managing primarily within mainstream school.
Will remedial education affect my child’s regular school attendance?
No. All remedial sessions are scheduled after school hours or on weekends specifically to avoid any impact on regular school attendance. We believe strongly in complementing mainstream schooling, not displacing it. The goal is always for the child to catch up sufficiently to manage increasingly independently within the regular school setting.
Do you work with the child’s school?
With parental consent, we actively liaise with the child’s school — sharing strategies, progress information and accommodation recommendations. Consistent approaches between our centre and the school accelerate the student’s progress significantly. We can attend school review meetings, provide formal letters to support accommodation requests and communicate directly with class teachers and learning support staff.
